There are so many myths and misinformation about Laptop radiation and solutions such as laptop shield out there.
How much radiation do laptops emit and what is the effect on our health? Like many other home appliances such as microwaves, cell phones, TVS etc laptops emit radiation. Many people spend a lot of time with these devices so it is important to fully understand the risk and know how to protect themselves. Of most concern are people who place laptops on their laps for hours on end (I used to be one of those). Here is what you need to know.
1. Yes laptops do emit radiation. One of the ways to minimize the effect is to place laptops and computers at a distance. It is recommended that people should limit electro magnetic fields to 1-3 mG (mill Gauss). However laptops can emit as much as 175mG at a distance of zero inches( ie when placed in contact with the body such as on laps).
The radiation from laptop comes from internal parts such as hard drive and memory chips. However even higher levels come from wireless radiation (caused by WiFi networks). In addition vibration effect and excess heat that is emitted by the laptop can damage reproductive cells for both males and females.
Placing the laptop over your lap for extended periods should be avoided. The excess heat released by laptop can damage reproductive system of both men and women. Male fertility is affected by the heat which increases the scrotal temperature which can harm sperm count. Placing your laptop near the scrotum for one hour increases testicular temperature by 2.7 degrees Celsius. One should not place a pillow between the laptop and lap. This damages the laptop as it stops it from cooling. Many people who have to place their laptops in their laps can be protected by a laptop radiation shield.
The Laptop screen can also puts out ELF/VLF E-fields and dust-attracting static electricity. This can damage eyes. There are screen protectors that can reduce up to 99% of the ELF/VLF E Fields.
Apart from these, there are other steps one can take to protect themselves from laptop radiation.
Laptop mount can also help in placing the laptop 3-6 inches away from the body. This will absorb most of the heat from the laptop.
For PCs one can use radiation grounding mats to protect themselves.
